Learn Paddle Board

Paddle boarding is growing in popularity and is a great way to see the area around you while getting some exercise. It is similar to kayaking in that you are not confined to the cockpit like on a boat, but unlike boats, Paddle board allow you to stand and gain an entirely different perspective of the area you are paddling over. This gives you a full body workout and an even better view of marine life than from the shore. Paddle boarding is also fun and relatively easy to learn, with only a few basic tips you can be paddling in no time.

A great place to start is by renting a board for a day and taking it out on a calm lake. This will give you the experience to figure out if you enjoy it (with a few hilarious early falls) and will help you decide if you would like to take lessons.

If you do decide to take a lesson, a good instructor will be able to teach you the proper technique and ensure your safety. It is important to follow their instructions closely so you do not end up hurting yourself or the board. The first thing to remember is that you should always be aware of your surroundings and never leave the shore without a personal flotation device, life jacket or leash. Several people drown each year in the water and most, if not all, could be prevented with proper water safety equipment.

How to Learn How to Paddle Board

One of the biggest issues that beginners have is how to get on and off the board without soaking themselves in cold water. A good method is to kneel in the center of the board and pull yourself onto it, holding both sides. If you have a hard time getting on, consider having a friend assist you. Another tip is to practice in shallow, calm water and only go out into the lake when you are confident in your ability.

While on the board, it is also important to learn how to properly hold the paddle. Using the correct grip will make it easier to move faster on the water, as well as keep you from losing control and falling off. To hold the paddle correctly, the blade should be angled slightly forward from the shaft, toward the nose of your board. This is called the power face and it is important for efficient paddling.

When a reverse stroke is needed, reach back behind yourself with the paddle and plant it in the water near the tail of the board. Then, twist from your torso to rotate the paddle and bring it toward the nose of the board. The reverse stroke is a simple but powerful motion that can be used for slowing down, stopping and turning.

It is important to note that a paddleboard can be used on most inland waters and seas, so there are endless opportunities for your next adventure. However, if you plan to travel far distances from the shore, it is important to have proper safety equipment as it can be difficult to swim in deep or murky water.
